Defragmentation is the process of rewriting parts of a file to contiguous sectors on a hard disk to increase the speed of access and retrieval. When files are updated, the computer tends to save these updates on the largest continuous space on the hard disk, which is often on a different sector than the other parts of the file. When files are thus fragmented, the computer must search the hard disk each time the file is opened to find all of the file's parts, which slows down response time. Paragon Partition Manager includes powerful defragmenter for NTFS and FAT partitions. Built-in defragmenter performs safe boot-time defragmentation of MFT and paging files, online Directory Consolidation. Moreover, it defragments and moves critical system files and frequently accessed files together on the external (fast) cylinders of the hard disk to increase your system’s performance. Enhanced data access speeds mean faster virus scans, back-ups, and file searches. Usage of original Paragon technologies allows to overcome limitations of build-in Windows Defrag (note that many commercial defragmenters use Windows defragmentation APIs, only interfaces differ). Thus, unlike other defragmenters, Partition Manager works at low-level, can sort and move files to external (fast) cylinders and requires less than 1% of free space on the hard drive to operate.
